TAN Bok Hoay

Bok Hoay is a Senior Partner of the Firm. His practice areas include intellectual property, corporate, insurance, landlord and tenant matters. He also oversees the corporate secretarial department of the firm. Bok Hoay holds non-executive directorship in and is Singapore agent for several multinational corporations.

Asia-Pacific Legal 500 lists Bok Hoay as the prime contact for corporate and M&A. Who’s Who Legal recommends him for trade marks, and Chambers Asia lists him as the contact for copyrights, patents, trade marks, designs, trade secrets and confidential information. Managing Intellectual Property Magazine states that he “is highly rated for his work with hi-tech computer and multinational software corporations.” He has been rated as one of the very top lawyers in the Asia Pacific region by senior in-house counsel of a notable house-hold name multinational corporation based in the United States.

  • Malaysia Dairy Industries Pte Ltd & Anor v Yakult (Singapore) Pte Ltd [1980] 1 MLJ 202 (Singapore High Court);
  • Re Dawe Amos William [1980]1 MLJ 200 (Singapore Court of Appeal);
  • Lea Tool and Moulding Industries Pte Ltd (in liquidation) v CGU International Insurance PLC (formerly known as Commercial Union Assurance Co PLC) [2001] 1 SLR 413;
  • Colgate-Palmolive Company v The Proctor & Gamble Company [2007] SGIPOS 13.

Bok Hoay served as Vice-President of the Asia Pacific Lawyers' Association (APLA) and in the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA), and as Singapore Representative of the APAA Anti-Counterfeiting Committee.

He has delivered numerous legal papers at legal conferences and seminars in many parts of the world. He also periodically contributes articles to legal publications and leading IP journals such as the European Intellectual Property Review and Copyright World.

Bok Hoay graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the then University of Singapore in 1966. He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1966 and joined Hilborne & Co. in 1967. In March 1968, he joined Donaldson & Burkinshaw, and became a Partner in 1973.
